This site

For the non-greek speaking people, contemporary Greek literature, considered apart from the Classical and Byzantine literary legacy, is probably a somewhat obscure subject. Yet it shares many common features with European Literature in general, while at the same time contains aspects which have yet to be thoroughly explored.

At this site the Society provides web-pages about contemporary Greek literature as well as biographical notes, bibliographies, photographs and other material relevant to its members.

You may search the site either by author's name or by literary genre (poetry, fiction, essay, etc.) Each author's web page represents the particular author's own judgment regarding its content. Most authors have included biographical and bibliographical data supplemented by photographs, excerpts from their work, and other material.

The site offers numerous links to sites related to books and writers in Greece and the world, as well as all sites related to the activities of the Society.
The Society

The Hellenic Authors' Society (formerly the "Greek Writers'" Society) is a non-governmental organization established on the 22 November 1981.

To qualify for membership, an author must fulfill the requirement of having published original works of recognized literary quality in the Greek language.
A candidate for membership must submit an application to the Society bearing the endorsements of at least seven members (one of whom makes a formal introduction). The candidate's application is then put to a vote of the members at the annual General Assembly of the Society. At present the Society embraces more than 240 members.
Goals

The general aim of the Society is to act as a connecting link between its members throughout the Greek world, and to defend freedom of expression.

Specific goals of the Society are:
  • to support and broaden the creative and professional interests of Greek writers
  • to represent the members' interests in relation to the Greek Government and its relevant official institutions, e. g., the National Book Centre of Greece
  • to negotiate and make contracts and agreements with the Government, and with publishers and their organizations, on the most advantageous terms for the support of creative work, and the welfare of Greek writers
  • to provide its members with information regarding writers, translators, and critics through its bi-monthly newsletter, and other relevant publications
  • to promote and encourage the involvement of Society members in other cultural organizations, societies, and official institutions throughout the country
  • to organize cultural events, such as conferences, meetings, seminars, and the like, of local and international scope and interest
  • to work, on the basis of common goals and activities, in co-operation with analogous societies and organizations in Europe and throughout the world, including but not limited to the following organizations: European Writers' Conference, Conseil Europeen des Associations de Traducteurs Litteraires, International Parliament of Writers, International Network for Cultural Diversity, Three Seas Writers and Translators Council
  • and, last but not least, to promote interest in Contemporary and Modern Greek literature beyond the borders of Greece.

8 Kodrington St., Athens, Greece

The Hellenic Authors' Society maintains offices at number 8 Kodrington St. in Athens, opposite the Pedio tou Areos park. This flat is of historical significance for both Greek letters and politics. It once belonged to the writer Dido Sotiriou, and her nephew Nikos Beloyiannis, whose father was a famous leftist martyr, the legendary 'Man with the carnation' (as portrayed by Pablo Picasso in the fifties), and whose mother was the journalist and writer Elli Pappa.

Dido Sotiriou, one of the most beloved modern Greek writers (best known for her Bleeding Earth) and her nephew generously donated the house to the Ministry of Culture on condition that it be used as permanent premises for the Hellenic Authors' Society. This is quite appropriate considering that the flat has in the past received visits from some of the most important figures in contemporary Greek politics and literature.
